Peaberry
The Story
Milk Street runs off the old market area, a short lane with real character that includes CSONS further along and a handful of independent businesses. At number 1 sits the former Shearmans Hall, a medieval guildhall building that once served the cloth trade that made Shrewsbury one of England's wealthier market towns. The ground floor is now Peaberry, an independent café bar that has occupied the space long enough to become one of the better-known names in the town.
The offering is broader than most cafés. The coffee is from Marabans, barista-prepared and consistently well-reviewed. Alongside it there is a fully licensed bar with cocktails, local beers and house wines, which means the building can shift between morning café and evening bar without a change of address. The kitchen runs all-day brunch and a stone-baked flatbread menu, with everything cooked to order from fresh ingredients.
Peaberry holds a TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice award for 2025 and sits in the top fifteen per cent of Shrewsbury restaurants by rating. The outdoor terrace on Milk Street gives it a small amount of outside space in warmer months, and the venue can be hired privately for evening events for groups of up to eighty. It is dog-friendly throughout.
Peaberry sits inside the former Shearmans Hall, a medieval building on Milk Street that most people walk past without knowing what it is. The coffee has a loyal following — it is regularly cited as the best in Shrewsbury. The all-day format, the licensed bar alongside the café, and the small outdoor terrace make it a place that works for a morning flat white as readily as it does for an afternoon glass of wine.
Enjoy Your Visit
Milk Street is a short walk from The Square, running between Pride Hill and the old market area. Peaberry is at number 1, at the near end of the lane. No parking directly outside — the town centre car parks are all within five minutes on foot. No reservation needed for café service during the day.
The coffee is the primary draw — flat whites and filter options are among the most talked-about in the town. For food, the all-day brunch covers the classics well, and the stone-baked flatbreads are the kitchen's more distinctive option. Fresh pastries and baked goods are available from opening.
Opening hours run to 4pm on weekdays, 5pm on Saturdays and 4pm on Sundays. The venue is dog-friendly and wheelchair accessible. Free WiFi throughout. For evening private hire the venue holds up to eighty people — contact the café directly to arrange.
