CSONS

8 Milk Street, Shrewsbury, SY1 1SZ

The Story

Milk Street is one of the quieter lanes running off the old market area, easy to miss if you do not know it is there. CSONS has been building its reputation here since the Crouch brothers opened it — Reuben, Adam, Ben and Josh, four brothers running a restaurant together, which gives the place a different energy from anywhere with a single owner behind a pass.

The food is all-day and difficult to place in the usual categories. Breakfast and brunch share the menu with globally inspired dishes that change with what is in season. On the first Thursday of every month, the kitchen runs a five-course Mystery Menu World Tour — a different country each time, announced at the table rather than previewed online. It is the kind of idea that only works if the cooking can actually back it up.

It can. Number nine on TripAdvisor out of over three hundred Shrewsbury restaurants, with a 4.7 rating built on years of word of mouth rather than advertising.

Four brothers running a restaurant together on Milk Street, changing the menu with the seasons and the cuisine by the month. The Mystery Menu World Tour alone would be enough to bring us back. The fact that the day-to-day cooking is also excellent makes it one of our most honest recommendations.

Enjoy Your Visit

Before you go

Book ahead for evenings and weekend brunch. The Mystery Menu on the first Thursday of every month fills quickly — reserve as soon as the date is announced on their website if you want a seat.

Getting here

Milk Street is a short lane off the market area, about five minutes on foot from The Square. Walk past the Market Hall on Claremont Street and look for the lane on the left. Easy to walk past — look for the signage.

The Mystery Menu

First Thursday of every month. Five courses, a different country each time, no previews. The Crouch brothers pick a cuisine and build a menu around it. Come without fixed expectations and that is how it works best.

After your meal

The Square is five minutes away on foot, with the old town lanes between. The Loggerheads on Church Street is the natural continuation of an evening if you want a drink in a genuinely historic pub rather than heading home.
