Côte Shrewsbury

14-16 The Square, Shrewsbury, SY1 1JZ

The Story

Côte was founded in 2006, built around the model of the classic Parisian brasserie — an all-day format with a menu of French classics, a good wine list and rooms designed to feel comfortable rather than casual. The Shrewsbury branch sits at 14-16 The Square, occupying one of the more visible positions in the town centre, on the main market square that has been the focus of Shrewsbury life for centuries.

The menu runs all day. Weekday service starts at 10am, weekend brunch from 9am. The evening menu continues until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The format suits the rhythm of a market town where people arrive at different times and want different things from the same building. It is not unusual to find a table of shoppers eating lunch next to a table of visitors working through the wine list.

The pavement terrace is what sets this branch apart from a straightforward chain visit. The Square is the heart of Shrewsbury — the weekly market runs here, the Christmas events happen here, and the general movement of the town passes through it. Côte has one of the largest outdoor terraces on The Square. In warmer months, those tables are consistently in demand.

The pavement tables on The Square put you in the middle of Shrewsbury's main public space, which on a good day is one of the better places in the county to sit and eat. Côte's menu is consistent and well-executed — the steak frites, moules and duck à l'orange are done properly and without surprises. For an all-day meal in a prime location, we come back here when we want something reliable.

Getting here

The Square is at the centre of Shrewsbury's town, a five-minute walk from the railway station and in the middle of the main shopping area. There is no parking at the restaurant — use one of the town centre car parks and walk in. Reservations are recommended for evenings and for pavement terrace tables in summer.

What to order

The steak frites is the kitchen's most popular dish and consistently well-reviewed. Moules marinière with crusty bread is the standard opener. The duck à l'orange is worth ordering if you want the kitchen to make more of an effort. Finish with the crème brûlée — it is the dessert most guests remember.

Good to know

Weekend service starts at 9am, which makes Côte one of the better breakfast and brunch options on The Square. The indoor dining room is comfortable and spacious. The pavement terrace fills quickly on warm evenings — ask specifically for a terrace table when you book, as the restaurant will hold one for you.
