The Loopy Shrew
The Story
The building on Bellstone was operating as a hotel long before the current name arrived. The Loopy Shrew replaced The Bellstone Hotel in 2019 — same building, same central position a short walk from The Square, a different personality.
Bellstone sits at the edge of the old town, close enough to the market and the medieval lanes to walk everywhere worth walking, and just far enough from the main tourist circuit to keep the street relatively quiet during the day. That changes in the evenings. The bar draws a crowd at weekends, which is worth knowing before you book a front-facing room.
The breakfast has been consistently well-reviewed across more than a thousand Booking.com ratings. The rooms are clean, the staff are well-regarded and the value for a central Shrewsbury hotel is genuine. For a no-fuss independent base from which to explore the town, it is one of the better options at this price point.
The location on Bellstone is as central as Shrewsbury gets without being on the main tourist thoroughfare. The bar has its own following. The breakfast earns consistent praise across over a thousand reviews. An independent hotel without pretensions, which is harder to find than it sounds.
Enjoy Your Stay
Breakfast is included and worth taking. The Square is three minutes on foot from the hotel — walk down after breakfast and the market area is already waking up. Shrewsbury's covered market on Claremont Street opens early and is a good first stop.
The Bear Steps are five minutes on foot — a medieval alley that cuts through the old town towards St Mary's Church. One of the best short walks in Shrewsbury and easy to find from Bellstone.
The Market Hall on Claremont Street is four minutes away. Independent traders, street food and local produce. Go before one o'clock for the best choice and a seat without waiting.
Shrewsbury Castle is ten minutes on foot up Castle Street. Free to visit, with the Shropshire Regimental Museum inside and views from the walls across the river loop. The English Bridge and the Abbey are another fifteen minutes beyond.
The bar downstairs has its own following and gets busy at weekends. If you are after an early night, ask for a room away from the front of the building when you book. If you are not, the bar is a reasonable place to start the evening before heading out into town.
