St Nicholas Boutique Hotel
The Story
The building on Castle Street was a church for three centuries before it became a hotel. The stained glass is still there. Thirteen individually designed bedrooms now occupy what was once a place of worship, with the original architectural features preserved around them rather than stripped out.
The conversion has been done with care. A cocktail bar, a restaurant and a spa have been fitted into the building without erasing what makes it worth visiting. The result is a hotel with a character that no amount of new-build boutique design can replicate.
Castle Street runs directly between The Square and Shrewsbury Castle, placing you at the centre of the old town. The railway station is five minutes beyond the castle on foot. The medieval lanes heading down towards the river are a few minutes in the other direction.
A 17th-century church on Castle Street, converted into thirteen individually designed rooms with the original stained glass intact. The cocktail bar and spa make it a proper destination rather than just somewhere to put your bags. One of the more distinctive places to stay in Shrewsbury.
Enjoy Your Stay
Walk up Castle Street to Shrewsbury Castle, two minutes from the hotel door. The views from the castle walls over the river loop are the best elevated views of the town. Free to visit — worth doing before the crowds arrive.
Head back down Castle Street and into the medieval lanes. The Bear Steps are five minutes on foot — a narrow alley that drops down through the old town towards the market and St Mary's Church. One of the best short walks in Shrewsbury.
The Square is five minutes on foot from the hotel. Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery is on The Square and free to enter — worth seeing before or after lunch if the weather turns.
The spa is on site. For those who would rather stay out, the English Bridge is fifteen minutes on foot along the river, with the Shrewsbury Abbey just beyond it on Abbey Foregate — free to visit and rarely crowded in the afternoon.
The cocktail bar downstairs is a destination in its own right — non-guests come specifically for it, which is usually a reliable indicator. Worth staying in for the first drink at least before deciding whether to head out.
