Walking Tours of Shrewsbury

The Square, Shrewsbury, SY1 1JP

The Story

Shrewsbury is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in England — over three hundred half-timbered buildings survive within the river loop, along with a castle, two ancient bridges and a street pattern that has changed little since the 13th century. The problem, for most visitors, is that none of it comes with a label.

The walking tours address that directly. Shropshire Museums runs a team of twenty guides holding Green Badge or Blue Badge qualifications, the formal professional accreditation for tourist guides in England. That level of training matters. The stories behind the Bear Steps, the reasons Wyle Cop looks the way it does, the significance of the buildings on Butcher Row — these are things a good guide makes legible in ninety minutes that a guidebook rarely manages in two hundred pages.

Tours depart daily from the Clive of India statue on The Square. Pre-booking is required.

Blue Badge guides who know the town in depth. Ninety minutes on foot covers more of Shrewsbury's history than most visitors manage in a full day of wandering independently. The best single way to understand what you are actually looking at.
